Bhisho: The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has expressed approval following the sentencing of 16 individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of four people at Ndindwa Village in Debenek.
According to South African Government News Agency, the sentencing was handed down on Friday at the Bhisho High Court after a harrowing case of vigilantism led to the brutal deaths on 31 December 2022. Community members, suspecting several individuals of electricity cable theft and intimidation, organized a meeting and decided to take matters into their own hands.
The four victims, identified as Vuyo Lamani (40), Lwando Makinana (30), Nwabisa Melani (29), and Ziphozihle Timba (37), were forcibly taken from their homes, assaulted, tied up, and brought to the center of the village. They were burned alive in front of horrified onlookers, including a nine-year-old child who witnessed the murder of her mother.
Chungwa SAPS officers responded to the scene and initiated an investigation, which was later escalated to the Bhisho High Court on 11 March 2024. The diligent efforts of SAPS detectives led to the arrest, charge, and conviction of 16 suspects.
The court imposed life imprisonment sentences for each count of murder, alongside additional sentences of eight years for kidnapping and three years for public violence. All accused received identical sentences. The convicted individuals include Dumisani Mpofana (38), Mluleki Xulu (48), Neliso Nkohla (31), Zwelandile Kitise (53), and several others.
Detective M. Mtshemla from Chungwa SAPS spearheaded the investigation with a dedicated team of investigators. Brigadier Zinakile Freddie, Amathole Acting District Commissioner, lauded the police for their unwavering commitment and hard work. "This sentence shows that crime and vigilantism will not be tolerated. I commend the members for their dedication in ensuring justice for the victims," stated Brigadier Freddie.
