Nephew sentenced for rape and murder of his grandmother

DURBAN On 13 December 2019, the Durban High court sentenced Senzo Cele (27) to 20 years imprisonment for murder and another 20 years for rape. His sentence came after the court heard how he brutally raped and killed his own grandmother in 2017.

It is alleged on the night of 02 December 2017, at 22:00, at Engonyameni, Ntombifikile Ntini (51) was asleep in a rondavel when her nephew entered. He forcefully raped his grandmother and assaulted her. She sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital for medical attention where she later died. A 27-year-old accused was arrested at the scene and was tried in court. Charges of murder and rape were opened for investigation at Bhekithemba SAPS. He appeared in court numerous times until he was sentenced.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused. This sentence will serve as a warning to other rapists that people of Senzo Cele’s calibre don’t have a place in our society, he said.
