KZN Premier Expresses Grief Over Pilot Student’s Death During Training Exercise

Kwazulu-natal: Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has expressed his sorrow following the death of 24-year-old pilot student Leeche' Manuel, who died in a flight training exercise in Johannesburg.

According to South African Government News Agency, Manuel, who was from eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, died in a plane crash on Thursday, 19 February, while undergoing advanced flight training. At the time of the incident, he was nearing the completion of his Instructor Rating and was on a routine practice flight with his instructor. Both Manuel and his instructor were fatally injured.

Premier Ntuli described the loss as devastating, noting that Manuel was more than a bursary recipient but an example of the talent and commitment the province aims to foster. 'Being on the verge of qualifying as a Flight Instructor is a testament to his commitment and hard work,' Ntuli stated. He extended condolences to Manuel's family, friends, and the aviation community on behalf of the Provincial Government and the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

Manuel received a bursary from the Office of the Premier to pursue his Commercial Pilot Licence and Instructor Rating. His training spanned multiple locations, beginning in Pietermaritzburg, continuing in Richards Bay, and concluding in Johannesburg, where he was completing specialized aircraft training for his final assessments.

The Premier has instructed the Bursary Unit to support the Manuel family during this challenging time. An official from the Office of the Premier will be sent to meet with the family to convey personal condolences and assist with immediate arrangements.
