Kwazulu-natal: MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has strongly condemned the violent attack, harassment, and intimidation of an e-hailing driver.
According to South African Government News Agency, the incident came to light after the leadership of the KZN e-Hailing Council reported receiving a video depicting the attack. The footage shows security guards from a company allegedly hired by the KwaNdengezi Taxi Association brandishing firearms and ordering the driver to drop off female passengers being transported at the time.
The video captures shots being fired at the vehicle's tyres, which led to the driver losing control and colliding with another car. In response to the incident, the provincial government has tasked a team from the Public Regulatory Entity and Operation Shanela to conduct a thorough investigation in collaboration with the South African Police Service and Metro Police.
MEC Duma emphasized the need for ballistic experts to be engaged to examine any cartridges found at the scene. He also urged the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) to investigate the conduct of the security guards for potential violations of the Private Security Industry Regulation Act.
Duma reiterated the government's dedication to maintaining stability in the public transport sector, highlighting ongoing efforts to collaborate with the South African National Taxi Council and other key stakeholders.
