Minister Meth Elected Vice Chair of ILO Government Group

Geneva: Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has been elected Vice Chairperson of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Government Group. In a significant development, this election highlights South Africa's influence and leadership in global labour matters.

According to South African Government News Agency, the election took place on Friday, 12 June 2026, where Minister Meth received overwhelming support from all 187 ILO member states. The Ministry of Employment and Labour stated that this historic endorsement not only reflects trust in South Africa's leadership but also acknowledges Minister Meth's personal leadership qualities.

The Ministry further explained that the ILO Governing Body serves as the executive council of the International Labour Organization. It is the supreme decision-making body of the ILO, operating outside the International Labour Conference. The Governing Body is responsible for shaping labour policies, setting agendas, adopting the programme and budget, and electing the Director-General.

A position on the Governing Body, especially as Vice Chairperson of a major group, carries substantial influence over global labour standards and social justice policies. This role affects millions of workers worldwide, underscoring the importance of Minister Meth's new position.
