Cape town: President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to undertake a significant diplomatic mission to Asia from 22 to 28 October 2025. The itinerary includes state visits to Indonesia and Vietnam, culminating in participation at the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit as a Guest of the Chair.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Presidential spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, highlighted the strategic importance of these visits. The engagement with Southeast Asian nations signifies South Africa’s intent to deepen strategic ties with the region. Magwenya emphasized that the interactions are crucial for diversifying and expanding South Africa’s export markets and strengthening inter-regional cooperation.
The President’s involvement in the ASEAN Summit is a follow-up to South Africa’s recognition as a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN in 2023. This partnership marks an important step in advancing South-South cooperation and fostering sustainable development through enhanced political, economic, and multilateral collaboration. The visits aim to explore alternative markets for South African products.
Magwenya further explained that these visits align with a broader initiative to open new trade opportunities and expand existing markets for South African goods. Beyond trade, President Ramaphosa seeks to establish skills development exchanges benefiting South African youth. In discussions with Heads of State and industry leaders, the President consistently emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for young people.
Before embarking on the Asian tour, President Ramaphosa has a busy schedule in Cape Town. On Tuesday, 14 October 2025, he will respond to oral questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). The session will address issues such as service delivery monitoring, reviving local industries, and updating South Africa’s International Court of Justice case against Israel.
Later that day, the President will deliver the keynote address at the Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) 30-year Anniversary International Conference. Magwenya noted that the PPSA has played a pivotal role in South Africa’s democratic ecosystem, maintaining its strategic importance in governance despite numerous challenges. The conference will gather governance and accountability institutions from BRICS, The Commonwealth, and other international organizations.
President Ramaphosa is also scheduled to address the 7th Social Justice Summit on Friday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The summit, focusing on social justice, food security, and peace, aligns with G20 priorities and will foster dialogue on accountability for constitutional governance. Magwenya stated that the summit aims to advance social justice through transformative governance and civil society action, involving business and development partners.
