Pretoria: The Cabinet has expressed strong disapproval regarding the alleged coronation of a Nigerian national as a chief in KuGompo City, located in the Eastern Cape. Minister in The Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, during a post-Cabinet media briefing, labeled the event as “a mere kindergarten gimmick” and stated that it holds no legal validity.
According to South African Government News Agency, Minister Ntshavheni emphasized that the establishment, recognition, and functioning of traditional leadership structures are strictly governed by the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act. This act outlines clear and indisputable procedures that must be followed to ensure legitimacy and official recognition of any traditional leadership roles.
The Cabinet acknowledged an apology from the Nigerian High Commission concerning the incident. Furthermore, the Cabinet has instructed the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to maintain dialogue with the High Commission to address the inappropriate conduct of certain Nigerian nationals in South Africa, which has been deemed unacceptable for visitors.
Minister Ntshavheni expressed concern over the fact that legitimate grievances regarding this matter have led to instances of violence and criminal activities. She reminded citizens that while they have the right to protest, it must be done responsibly, peacefully, and within the confines of the law.
