Durban:eThekwini Municipality has completed three significant stormwater infrastructure projects valued at R232.6 million in the South Durban Basin. These projects aim to enhance flood resilience and improve drainage capacity in Prospecton, a crucial industrial, manufacturing, and logistics hub for the city.
According to South African Government News Agency, the completed projects include the R180 million Prospecton Road Canal Upgrade, the R46 million Clark Road Sea Outfall in Isipingo, and the R6.6 million Umlazi Mission-A sports field attenuation upgrade. These initiatives form part of an integrated stormwater management system designed through detailed hydraulic modeling of the Prospecton catchment area. The upgrades are intended to slow stormwater flows upstream, enhance drainage through Prospecton, and increase the capacity to discharge water into the sea during severe weather events.
These infrastructure developments underscore the importance of investing in resilient drainage systems to protect industrial assets, support economic activities, and safeguard surrounding communities and transport networks. The South Durban Basin is a key manufacturing and logistics zone, supporting thousands of jobs and serving as a critical link in both national and international supply chains.
City Manager Musa Mbhele emphasized the necessity of continued investment in infrastructure to ensure the area's long-term sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience. He highlighted that manufacturers and investors need confidence in the infrastructure supporting their operational environments.
The completion of these projects coincides with Durban hosting SA Auto Week at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, themed 'Transforming Tomorrow Today.' Mbhele noted that the projects demonstrate the value of targeted, evidence-based infrastructure investment, reflecting the city's commitment to supporting South Africa's major manufacturing hubs while safeguarding communities and transport networks.
The R180 million Prospecton Road Canal Upgrade, completed in June 2026 after 26 months of construction, involved upgrading 1.96 kilometers of canal infrastructure with a reinforced concrete base slab and vertical retaining walls to boost stormwater capacity. It also included a 1.3-kilometer pedestrian walkway and two dedicated taxi lay-bys.
The R46 million Clark Road Sea Outfall in Isipingo, completed in June 2025, enhanced the area's ability to discharge stormwater into the ocean during heavy rainfall, including the installation of 350 meters of precast portal culverts and a 100-meter pipe-jacked section under the beach dune, which has been fully rehabilitated.
The R6.6 million Umlazi Mission-A sports field attenuation upgrade, completed in January 2025, transformed the sports field into a dual-purpose facility for community recreation and stormwater management by lowering the field to temporarily hold stormwater and reduce downstream flooding risks. The field has been re-grassed and restored for community use.
Mbhele expressed gratitude to residents and businesses in Prospecton, Isipingo, and Umlazi for their cooperation during construction and encouraged the public to assist in protecting the infrastructure by avoiding waste dumping into canals and stormwater systems and reporting blocked drains to the municipality. This stormwater upgrade program is part of the municipality's broader commitment to building resilient infrastructure and supporting sustainable economic development across eThekwini.
