Gauteng Government Celebrates Achievements of Comrades Marathon Runners

Gauteng: The Gauteng provincial government has extended its congratulations to all participants in the 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon. From elite athletes and seasoned ultramarathoners to first-time finishers, runners took part in what is considered one of the world's most challenging endurance events.

According to South African Government News Agency, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile commended the athletes, emphasizing that every participant who stood on the start line and crossed the finish line deserves recognition. Maile highlighted that the Comrades Marathon is not merely a race but a celebration of perseverance, discipline, and the human spirit's potential.

The 2026 Comrades Marathon featured an 85.7km up run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, showcasing participants' courage, resilience, and determination. Special recognition was given to George Kusche for his victory, with Maile describing his win as a masterclass in endurance running. Kusche's performance was seen as a testament to what can be achieved through preparation and belief.

Maile noted the unifying power of the marathon, where runners of different backgrounds pursued a common dream, emphasizing the importance of unity and social cohesion. He praised the Comrades Marathon Association for organizing a successful event that drew runners from South Africa and beyond, celebrating athletic excellence.

The event also saw participation from public servants across the Gauteng provincial government. Departments such as Education and Health each had 42 participants, while Social Development, e-Government, and others contributed runners to the event.

Maile expressed pride in Gauteng's participants, acknowledging their discipline and endurance. He encouraged more people to run, promoting wellness and social cohesion. Looking forward, Maile expressed confidence in Gauteng's potential to produce a future Comrades Marathon champion and anticipated the 100th edition of the race in 2027.
