Gauteng Roads and Transport Department Seeks Funding for Sinkhole Repairs

Accra:Gauteng The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is actively seeking additional funding from the provincial Treasury to address the rehabilitation of sinkholes that have impacted the R500 and R563 roads.

According to South African Government News Agency, the funding is intended to cover the costs of technical and geotechnical investigations necessary to determine the appropriate rehabilitation measures for these sinkholes. Preliminary assessments have revealed that over 80% of the road surface along a section of the R500 has caved in, leading to the closure of sections of the road as a precautionary measure due to safety concerns.

The department is continuing to assess the full extent of the damage before deciding on the remedial actions required. In the meantime, additional warning signs have been installed to alert motorists approaching the affected areas, urging them to exercise caution.

Discussions are in the final stages regarding the appointment of a contractor to repair the sinkhole along the R563, with a decision expected soon. Traffic accommodation remains in place along the designated detour routes at both sites, and the department advises motorists to adhere to all road signage, reduce speed, and exercise caution when using these routes.
