Gauteng Safety Committee Urges Action After Katlehong Shooting

Katlehong:The Gauteng Provincial Legislature's Portfolio Committee on Community Safety is advocating for urgent measures against illegal firearms after a mass shooting in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, resulted in four fatalities and three injuries earlier this week.

According to South African Government News Agency, the victims were returning from a memorial service for a political party member when they were attacked. The committee's statement emphasized the need for a gun-free Gauteng to prevent senseless gun violence and the associated loss of life.

The committee is calling for enhanced enforcement against illegal firearms, effective control measures, intelligence-led policing, and collaboration between law enforcement and communities. Residents are encouraged to report illegal gun possession to authorities and avoid vigilante actions.

The suspect reportedly surrendered to police and is due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court. The committee stresses the importance of a comprehensive investigation to determine the legality of the firearm involved and hold those responsible accountable.

Condolences have been extended to the victims' families, with the committee reiterating its stance that Gauteng must become a safe environment free from gun violence, where all residents can live without fear.
