NPA Launches International Investigation Following Omotoso Acquittal

Johannesburg: The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is advancing an international investigation into the initial team of prosecutors involved in the Timothy Omotoso case, following significant public reaction to the verdict.

According to South African Government News Agency, the judgment by Judge Irma Schoeman criticized the prosecution for its inadequate cross-examination of the accused, leading to Omotoso’s acquittal due to insufficient evidence. The investigation’s scope has now been broadened to include both prosecution teams, with potential disciplinary actions being considered. Additional officials have been appointed by the NPA to support this extended investigation, with the report anticipated by June 2025.

The NPA, appealing the acquittal, recognizes the verdict’s impact on the battle against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in the nation. They maintain that there were errors in the judge’s findings and emphasize the case’s adverse effects on the victims and confidence in the justice system’s ability to handle SGBV cases. Despite the setback, the NPA reaffirms its commitment to supporting SGBV victims, urging them to report incidents and seek assistance from Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs).

The NPA highlighted the success of the TCCs, noting a 77% conviction rate for cases processed through these centers. The organization also showcased recent successful prosecutions, including cases of human trafficking and serious offenses, underscoring their prosecutorial capabilities. Additionally, the NPA called on community cooperation with law enforcement to tackle the ongoing SGBV crisis.

The prosecutorial body remains dedicated to supporting victims and ensuring accountability for perpetrators, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive societal response to address the issue.
