SANParks Invests R136.5 Million in Addo Elephant National Park Upgrades

Addo:The South African National Parks (SANParks) has allocated R136.5 million towards upgrading facilities and infrastructure at Addo Elephant National Park. This investment aims to enhance the park's tourism offerings, improve visitor experience, and support operational sustainability.

According to South African Government News Agency, the upgrades include the completion of eight modern family accommodation units and comprehensive improvements to the park's sewer and electrical infrastructure. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment David Maynier emphasized the importance of providing high-quality accommodations and facilities at various price points, ensuring that visitors enjoy the best of South Africa's offerings.

Maynier's visit to the park on Monday included interactions with visitors, who provided feedback on the required upgrades to meet international standards. The park has completed a new spa, which is now operational, and is working towards the construction of additional accommodation units and refurbishment of existing ones, slated for opening in December 2026.

Future plans include a 10-unit Community Lodge expected to be operational by January 2027 and a 705-kW grid-tied solar plant set for commissioning in the same month. Road maintenance is ongoing, and further projects are planned to enhance the park's conservation efforts and long-term sustainability.

Maynier acknowledged the challenges faced by the park's infrastructure but expressed satisfaction with the progress made, with several facilities scheduled to be ready for the December holidays. SANParks is prioritizing the urgent upgrade of ablution facilities and hiking trails to further improve the park's standards.
