Services Restored at Gqeberha Healthcare Facilities After Strike Action

Gqeberha: The Dora Nginza Hospital and the Motherwell Community Health Centre (CHC) in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, are back to full working capacity following unprotected strike action at the two facilities.

According to South African Government News Agency, Eastern Cape Department of Health Head of Department (HOD) Dr. Rolene Wagner briefed the media on the situation. Dr. Wagner expressed gratitude to the community for their patience during the disruptions and acknowledged the efforts of those who assisted in managing the healthcare services amidst the challenges.

Wagner explained that the striking workers at Motherwell CHC raised concerns over safety due to a series of criminal incidents, including six break-ins where computers were stolen without signs of forced entry. The department has initiated an investigation and has implemented various security measures, such as installing floodlights, CCTV cameras, repairing access gates, and enhancing perimeter patrols.

Additionally, security measures were reinforced after another attempted break-in, and trauma debriefing was organized for affected workers. Regarding Dora Nginza Hospital, Wagner stated that the facility faced challenges as some non-striking staff were removed from wards, and union members disrupted operations. The strike was reportedly linked to issues of additional overtime and the pressure on Dora Nginza to accommodate patients from Motherwell CHC.

The department has involved SAPS and lodged a case against individuals disrupting operations, aiming to restore and maintain order within the facilities.
