South Africa and Uganda Aim to Enhance Trade and Investment Relations

Pretoria:South Africa and Uganda are working to strengthen trade and investment ties by addressing barriers that businesses face, improving connectivity, and expanding cooperation across key economic sectors.

According to South African Government News Agency, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola, during the Third Session of the South Africa-Uganda Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) in Pretoria, stressed the importance of translating bilateral commitments into tangible economic benefits. Lamola highlighted opportunities for cooperation in areas such as transport, mining, energy, agriculture, and telecommunications.

He noted that several South African companies, including MTN and Standard Bank Group, have operations in Uganda, contributing to its economic development. However, the full potential of the investment relationship has yet to be realized, prompting a call for both governments to address challenges affecting investors and create a supportive business environment.

The Minister also emphasized the significance of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement in enhancing connectivity and facilitating the movement of goods and people between the two countries. He welcomed the expansion of South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation system to Ugandan passport holders to support business mobility.

Lamola called for greater efforts in regional and international cooperation, urging stronger coordination within the United Nations, the African Union, and other forums. He highlighted Uganda's role in regional peace efforts and emphasized the need for African-led approaches to resolving conflicts.

Additionally, Lamola underscored the importance of cooperation in defence, security, and public health, congratulating Uganda on its response to the Ebola outbreak. The Third Session of the JCC provides an opportunity to review progress in bilateral relations and identify further areas of cooperation.
