UKZN Engineering Lab Upgraded with R2.2 Million Investment

Durban:The University of KwaZulu-Natal's (UKZN) School of Engineering has enhanced its computer laboratory, following a R2.2 million investment by Aberdare Cables aimed at improving digital learning and strengthening engineering skills development. The newly upgraded lab now accommodates 163 students.

According to South African Government News Agency, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Nomusa Dube-Ncube, officially inaugurated the AberTech LAN facility on Wednesday. The investment is intended to equip students for the challenges of a rapidly evolving technological and industrial landscape.

The improved facility, which previously had space for only 80 students, now includes 175 new network access points, modern workstations, new projection systems, improved lighting, and a collaborative learning environment. Dr. Dube-Ncube emphasized the importance of partnerships between government, higher education institutions, and industry to enhance education quality and ensure graduates possess relevant workplace skills.

She urged Aberdare Cables and UKZN to expand their collaboration beyond infrastructure improvements to include opportunities for Work Integrated Learning, internships, and workplace placements. The Deputy Minister highlighted the necessity of industry investment in engineering education to develop skills that support South Africa's economic growth, particularly in sectors like energy.

Dr. Dube-Ncube also addressed the need for peaceful dispute resolution among students, following tensions related to the university's Student Representative Council elections. She condemned violence against staff and called for respect, equality, and the addressing of gender-based violence within the university community.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister linked the investment to efforts in developing engineering solutions to climate change challenges and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on quality education, gender equality, and climate action.
